Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda’s most visited and most biodiverse protected area. Its landscapes are extraordinarily varied: savannah, wetland, forest, lake, channel, volcanic crater.
But Queen Elizabeth is defined by two phenomena:
The Kazinga Channel — a 32-kilometre natural artery connecting Lake George and Lake Edward. It holds Africa’s highest concentration of hippos.
The Tree-Climbing Lions of Ishasha — lions that have uniquely adapted to draping themselves over fig tree branches. No one knows definitively why. Perhaps for the cooling breeze. Perhaps to escape tsetse flies. Perhaps, as some guides believe, simply because they can.

TIPS
- Prioritise the boat cruise — The Kazinga Channel boat safari is the single best wildlife experience in Queen Elizabeth. Do not skip it.
- Allocate time for Ishasha — The southern sector is a 2-3 hour drive from Mweya. If tree-climbing lions are your priority, stay overnight in Ishasha.
- Combine with Kyambulo — The crater lakes drive offers spectacular views and is often overlooked by safari vehicles.
- Visit the Katwe salt works — A fascinating cultural add-on. Local communities have harvested salt from these craters for centuries.
- Consider a Kazinga dinner cruise — Sunset on the channel is magical. Some operators offer evening cruises with sundowners.
