Murchison Falls is Uganda’s largest and oldest national park. It is defined by a single, spectacular phenomenon:
The Nile, compressed from 300 metres to 7 metres, plunging 45 metres through a narrow gorge.
The thunder is audible from kilometres away. The spray rises 30 metres. Rainbows form and dissolve in seconds.
But Murchison is more than the falls. It is Big Five territory. It is the only place in Uganda where you can track white rhinos on foot. It is home to Rothschild’s giraffe, Jackson’s hartebeest, and the elusive shoebill stork.
To stand at the top of Murchison Falls is to feel the raw power of Africa’s greatest river.

THE RHINO EXPERIENCE
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a conservation success story. Located en route to Murchison Falls, this 70km² sanctuary is the only place in Uganda where you can see wild rhinos.
Activity: Rhino tracking on foot
Duration: 1-2 hours
Difficulty: Easy
Cost: USD $55-70
Population: 30+ white rhinos
Sighting Probability: >95%
Why it matters: Uganda’s last native rhinos were poached to extinction in 1983. Ziwa’s population descends from individuals reintroduced from Kenya. Your visit directly funds ongoing conservation.

- Add Ziwa — Rhino tracking is a perfect en route add-on. Do not skip it.
- Request the Buligi Circuit — This delta region offers the highest predator concentration in the park.
- Visit during December–February — Wildlife viewing is optimal, and the roads are dry.
- Combine with Kibale — Murchison + Kibale is a classic Uganda combination: savannah giants and forest primates.
